To try and sum up what I learned this summer in one blog post would be practically impossible. Each and every day different experiences come to mind, and I am still learning and processing all that I saw, heard, and experienced. God really did an overhaul on my heart in the last year, especially this summer. He showed me what it means to rely completely on Him; to depend on His redeeming love, and provision for every single breath. He reminded me over and over again that my identity is solidified in Him and in Him alone. I think the biggest lessons learned were in God revealing Himself to me. He showed me different aspects of His character from all parts of His creation.
God is LOVE. He used each individual that was a part of Choose to Invest to magnify His unending and creative love. Whether it was in the form of providing meals, providing a place to stay or offering prayer and encouragement; the Lord’s people rallied around the Journey team this year and poured into us the refreshing power of God’s love. The members of the Journey team were also used individually in very specific ways to reveal God’s character. Unconditional grace, unending joy, words of encouragement, desire to soak up God’s Word, and eternal investment, all mark just some of the traits of the community of incredible people I am blessed to do life with. Through this divinely crafted team of people God showed and is still showing me how endlessly creative He is, and how faithful He is in His pursuit of His beloved children.
God is PEACE. Amidst pain and suffering, God is peace. Despite uncertainty and doubt, God is peace. The people in Kenya are shining examples of that. Circumstances don’t make them question where their identity lies. They are so confident in the saving power of Jesus that as a result nothing can shake the peace they find in their Savior. One person who stands out as a shining example of this is a beautiful young woman named Anne. Despite tragedy she remained joyful. She continued to dream and pursue a life living to exalt the name of Jesus. She radiated peace in chaos, beauty among ashes. She exemplified the peace found in Jesus Christ.
God is MAGESTIC. All of the nature surrounding the communities shouts praise to the majesty of our Creator. One of my most favorite things to do at night while we were camping (both in the US and in Kenya) was to go off by myself and just stare in admiration at the stars in the sky. My heart could do nothing but worship the God who is big enough to hold the universe in His hands, and still is so passionately in love and pursues each of us individually.
God is JOY. God is HEALER. God is GOOD. God is FATHER. God is PROVIDER. God is HERE.
I could go on and on about different things I learned this summer. How God is present everywhere. How He deeply loves, and wants us to fall passionately in love with Him. The lessons learned are endless. God is so beyond what words could express. I will leave you with one more thing God showed me this summer.
HE is MOVING. Everywhere you look, God is moving. He wants you to be a part of the great plan He has to bring His beloved home. He wants you to pour into those around you, to invest in His kingdom. To live for something greater than yourself. To be a part of a movement. He wants to show you how great life can be; to be filled with peace regardless of circumstances. He wants to you know where your identity lies, and to help others find their identity in Christ. He wants you to reach out, to serve selflessly, to love without bounds. It is in investing in others that He is ultimately glorified. It is in taking part of His desires, in sharing His love that you are able to be loved. It is in serving Christ that you experience Him. And it is in experiencing Him, and His glory, that you are forever changed.
No matter where you go, live a life of eternal investment. Pour yourself out, so that God can fill you. Step out in faith. Experience His LOVE. Be radically changed.
“But blessed are those who trust in the Lord, and have made Him their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green and they never stop producing fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8
